CURRENT EVENTS IN “PEW NEWS”

Comments from Harry Eve, a visitor to our website who is tracking his ancestors through our Parish and beyond. He also raises some question marks - if anyone knows the relevant answers, please let me know and I will pass them on:

“Some items that may interest you :

From Parish registers :

  • Henry Eve (Minister) signs the first page on film in 1653 (I think he took over in 1649)
  • March 11 1685(=1686) "the Reverend Henry Eve DD of this parish almost forty years" [new line] "Vicar - buried"
  • July 31 1686 "Capt Henry Eve" (He was the son of Dr Henry)
(There is a probate record which I have not yet seen that states that he died at sea in 1685 aboard HMS (name illegible at a place illegible))
  • 10/9/1718 "NB The Revd William Wickens vicar of Lynsted and rector of Eastling was buried at Eastling"
  • Hasted has many references to the Eve family particularly in the lists for churches (Lynsted, Buckland, Midley, Tenham)
  • Dr Henry was born in Wye in 1618 to Robert and Dorothie.
  • Capt Henry married Dorothy Ady in Barham (1675)
  • A Charles Eve (almost certainly Capt Henry's son) marries Lucy Brockman in Cheriton (1713). I believe the Ady and Brockman names have Lynsted connections. Perhaps the Eve family were royalists - although I am not sure how that squares up with being a "profiteer of the commonwealth period".
  • Hasted states that the Eve family owned the manor of Worneland (alias Borden) for a while but so far I can find nothing in the local history to support that.”

Note: Memorials exist in the parish church naming Henry Eve, his relations Dorothy (died of apoplexy, 1755) and Elizabeth Eve (daughter of Henry Eve, and first wife of Thomas Barling, her date of death not noted on the memorial).
