Greenstreet Families

"I was very interested to see the work you have undertaken on the website concerning the 1871 Census.

My link with Lynsted is my grandfather, William Ernest Kemp, who was the third generation of master saddlers to trade from what is now 118, London Road. He appears as a member of the Parish Council in the 1908-09 Directory also added, a position he appears to have retained until his death in 1937. My uncle, Ernest Cecil Kemp, is included on the Lynsted war memorial having been lost when H.M.S. Primula was sunk in 1916.

For some time I have been trying to work out the relationships of the various Kemp households shown for the 1881 Census (six for Lynsted/Teynham with one each in Faversham and Sittingbourne also originating there). They include three families of saddlers who, I believe, must be related. My grandfather is quoted in Elizabeth Selby's book of 1935 as stating that the family previously kept The George in Greenstreet and may have originated in Ospringe.

Unfortunately progress on unravelling this problem is rather slow using the Internet, but I hope to move the project forward when I return to Kent later this year. In the meantime I look forward to further stages of your own project with interest.

Yours sincerely
