THE SOCIETY SOCIAL HISTORY PROJECT - UPDATE

Recording and Archiving of Local History

The Society started this project with a BANG in May!  So, first of all, a mighty “thank you” goes to every one who made it such a resounding success - those who brought material to record, those who helped interpret the photographs, those who kept us watered and fed.  There was real animation as friends and family met and chatted.

Since May, we have scanned over 1,600 individual items and returned nearly all the material loaned to us to copy/archive.  As you can imagine, this has not been a small task to fit into our other lives but the material you and others have shared with us is astonishing in its variety and interest!  We have recorded written stories, personal photographs covering all walks of life and events over the years up to the modern day, deeds and wills, sale documents, newspaper cuttings, postcards, physical artefacts (photographed) and so on.... We are still happily receiving new material as people discover them. So, please do keep it coming.  To know more or contribute, please contact us using parishrecords@lynsted.com. Latest news can be found on the ‘holding page’ for this project.

The Society will have a stand at Cherry Day on 11th July in Park Farm Orchard. So please do come and visit us and see just a sample of what we have received so far.

INFORMATION REQUESTS RECEIVED BY THE SOCIETY

1) John E. Rayner is researching his family, which has lived in Lynsted, Ospringe, and Teynham. His great-grandfather ran The Fox (now closed), and his grandfather was born there - some siblings emigrated in the early 1900s, mostly to Canada and America.  Other family links he is pursuing include - Rayner, Rainer, Reiner and their spouses with the names of Packham, Spice, Ray, Partis and others. Mr Rayner believes he is the only remaining Rayner in the UK.  If you have any information about these family names, please let us know.

2) A family researcher recently contacted the Committee asking for information on the history of Hartshorn and connections with Colyers Farm Cottage.  Other local relations included Gertrude Rose Judges whose parents were Albert and Naomi Judges (who married Arthur Day and had a son Leonard Day).  That family lived in the house named 'Judges' - and she would like to know more about that house. If you have anything, please let Lis know.
