BOXING day was a special day this year for George (75) and Gladys Macey (72) - their golden wedding anniversary.
George said: "We've had a good married life though, of course, we have had our ups and downs like everyone else."
The circumstances of George and Gladys' first meeting were a little unusual to say the least.
George said: "I was in the army band - Queen's Royal West Surreys - and was stationed at Dover. We were marching up the street in full dress playing when Gladys took a fancy to me. When the band stopped playing she came up to me and we got chatting."
George joined the army in 1917 as a 14 year old band boy. He was stationed in Sittingbourne for a while and spent 12 years with the army. He left in 1929, was fed up with being under a governor and determined to be his own boss.
He walked all the way from Dover to Swale with a pony and cart selling fish.
But George was determined to go into farming and in 1938 he moved to Stedlyn Farm, Lynsted.
George and Gladys have one daughter - Mrs. Myrtle Scott, a local district nurse - and a nine-year-old grandchild.
They held a party at Teynham Labour Hall on Boxing day to celebrate.

VICAR'S 'TURKEY TROT'

THE VICAR of Lynsted the Rev. Bill Hill took on the role of Father Christmas in addition to his normal pastoral duties.
The presents were the gifts of local farmer and butcher Mr. George Macey, of Stedlyn Farm, who celebrated his golden wedding on Boxing Day.
About 20 pensioners in Lynsted benefited from Mr. Hill's "Turkey Trot." They all received a turkey and some sausage meat.
Pictured here are Len and Win Apps, of Lynsted Lane, receiving their Christmas gift.
Win said: "I think it's a very good idea. A marvellous gesture by George."
Mr Hill commented: I'm very grateful to George. The church normally does about 20 parcels for pensioners and housebound people but this means a few more people will get ……

SCHOOLING CAN MAKE OR MAR
The B.R.S. of racing – breeding, rearing and schooling – is the natural order of events, but that the last part of this sequence attracts less than the attention it deserves is shown by the prevalence of "dodgy" dogs.
I contend that correct schooling is essential if a greyhound is to fulfil its potential. Big sums are paid for breeding and rearing, but when the time comes for school the penny-pinching begins.
Although methods differ from school to school, there is no short cut to getting a puppy to chase. It is sheer hard work and dedication – with gimmicks kept to a minimum.
I have seen nine-month-olds chasing really well, as at Stedlyn, where Mr George Macey admits the odds of a youngster this age being "interested" are about one in seven. He should know, for he has the reputation of getting a greyhound to chase after others have given up.
But, usually, most schools wait until the puppy is a year old before attempting to smooth off the rough edges.
One point should be made here: although a month to six weeks may be enough time to school a greyhound to a standard acceptable by the track, he must be fast enough.

Unnecessary expense
A puppy may trap like a veteran, but if he is too slow the reputable establishment will quickly say so and save unnecessary expense.
Stedlyn takes in pups for rearing from eight weeks to racing age. With graduation pens, a check can be kept on the backward ones.
Until 14 weeks of age, all pups are kept on concrete to counteract fallen arches.
The emphasis is on freedom and as the puppy progresses he is moved from paddock to paddock until he reaches the final class – or "the banks", as it is called. The banks are truly formidable, with a one in four gradient, but, says Mr Macey, it gives the youngster muscle.
The first time a puppy is taken on to the track he goes to watch. This is almost in……
….alongside puppies in a starting box. The experienced dog will trap out and soon be on the hare. The idea is for the puppies to follow suit.
One well-known establishment frowns on this "school-master" antic since it claims the puppy is merely chasing the older greyhound. Others counter this by saying that if a puppy wants to get on with its work, it will be only the hare that it wants.
After a full circuit is completed the hare should be taken away from the puppy and a skin thrown down – but long before the pick-up: a sudden deviation in directions could mean a puppy will wrench itself.
The lure, as far as possible, should remain a mystery to the puppy.
Familiarity breeding contempt is amply illustrated in schooling a puppy. An owner who has reared a litter from just a few weeks of age can quite often encounter trouble when he steps on to the track for the first time. The puppies think it is a game, and great patience is called for to convince them otherwise.
Put to school with other youngsters, they are much more likely to get on with their work with a strange and commanding voice instilling the discipline. There is no reason why they should not turn out useful trackers.
The soft, or backward, puppy soon stands out and is sent home.

It's a dog's life

THIS WEEK, the Queen became a greyhound owner's wife. I hope she knows what she's in for.

Strange things happen to men when they own greyhounds and there's no reason to suppose that Prince Philip with his dog, Camira Flash, will be any different.

Like all faithful owners, he will go hungry at times so that Camira can eat. When the dog is ill, he will sleep with it in its kennel. And should things go badly wrong he will, one hopes, sell Buckingham Palace before parting with Camira.

If Prince Philip obeys these basic rules of greyhound owning and remembers to put the dog before the wife at all times, he will have a winner on his hands.

He will also, of course, have to listen to his wife saying things like, "I don't know why you don't marry that bloody dog."

He was so anxious to arrive early. He wanted to take a look at Britain's finest training, rearing and schooling establishment before buying one of our lovely pups. One of the greatest advantages of sending an untried pup to a reputable school is that it will receive far more tuition than the owner may be able to give himself at very often, little difference in the amount of money for fees than would be expended on getting to and from, as well as paying for, comparable trials at a suitable circuit.

Mr George Macey, who has had many young greyhounds pass through his hands at his well-equipped Stedlyn Kennels in Kent – some from just a few weeks old to others who have raced but have shown very little track-craft – charges 10gns for a month's intensive schooling.

He says:"We get very few failures in this time and we are soon able to tell an owner whether or not their greyhounds will make the grade."

This seems very little outlay for the most essential part of my young greyhound's preparation.
